In “Optics of Aging” stereotypes of ageism are confronted and the beauty of aging is revealed through five Rhode Island elders who have shaped the landscape of Rhode Island and beyond. Their voices take flight against the backdrop of archival imagery that captures the vision of an earlier time.

“Optics of Aging” seeks to take on the realities of aging and ageism through simple,

personal stories of “olders.” While certain physical limitations are real as we age, many faculties strengthen and many people report the older years as the happiest years of their lives. Through the voices of five elders who have shaped the character of Rhode Island, ageist stereotypes are dissolved and wisdom in aging is revealed. Stereotypes not only have the effect of causing early death for those who hold them, but they also serve to maintain biases in our country that rob young and old alike of wisdom, guidance, learning, and a wealth of experience and knowledge.

“Ageism harms everyone – old and young. But often, it is so widespread and accepted –

in our attitudes and in policies, laws, and institutions – that we do not even recognize its

detrimental effect on our dignity and rights, said Michelle Bachelet, United Nations High

Commissioner for Human Rights. We need to fight ageism head-on, as a deep-rooted

human rights violation.” (World Health Organization)

The subject of aging is front and center in our country right now. How old is too old? Is

age really just a number? Regardless of one’s answer to these questions, we all have

ageist stereotypes that we grow up with from a very young age and they rob young and

old alike of the ability to imagine a rich elderhood.

In this two-hour webinar, we will watch the documentary film “Optics of Aging” and then

discuss aging and ageism in ourselves and our country.
