The concept of a ‘Thin Place’ is an ancient one, arising from the Celtic tradition. The Celts describe thresholds as “thin times or places” where heaven and earth are closer together and the veil between the worlds is thin. There is a Celtic saying that “heaven and earth are only three feet apart, but in the Thin Places the distance is even smaller.”

In the Celtic imagination, these threshold-places were where the veil between the worlds was especially permeable or thin and so we had access to a deeper connection with the spiritual wisdom of the divine, of the saints and mystics, and of our ancestors. Thin Places exist between the new and the not-yet-so.

It feels, in the world today, we have collectively entered a time and space of threshold or ‘Thin Place,’ as we try to make sense of the world around us and, indeed, within us; where the old has fallen away and the new has not yet come into being. This is true for our external and internal worlds. As we look at the unraveling that is happening in the world today, our ‘thin places’ displace us—from our comfort zones, from the way we think life should be and call into question how to contend with our pain and our longing for things to be different. Each of us stands at the threshold of our own pain or wonder—our own thin place.

So, we can ask how does Celtic wisdom inform us in our role as elders or emerging elders

  • as we confront our own mortality and our legacy
  • as we are called to deal with uncertain and challenging times
  • as we hear the cry of the earth and see the need to care for the earth and all of creation

In this webinar we will explore the concepts of:

  • thresholds and thin places
  • the role of blessings from the Celtic perspective
  • soul friendship
  • three essential things

This is a stand-alone webinar that will have a follow-up series in the new year on “Embracing Celtic Spiritual Wisdom in Everyday Life.”

Facilitators

Martina Breen M.A. CSL is a trained psychotherapist and Spiritual Companion who has worked for many years facilitating community and corporate groups in navigating change and enhancing emotional health and healing.

Growing up as the youngest daughter of a large Irish family and being immersed in the traditions and customs of nature and the land, led her to explore her Celtic roots and the innate wisdom it holds and offers. In her younger years, she used to attend the Dawn Mass at Easter with John O’Donoghue before he left the priesthood. In 2011, she began her training as an Anamcara (Spiritual Midwife) and completed an MA in Applied Christian Spirituality.

Martina has been facilitating programs on living and dying and the wisdom of Celtic Spirituality. She has been influenced by many native Irish wisdom teachers such as Caitlin Matthews, Dara Molloy, John Philip Newell, and of course, John O’Donoghue. When she’s not working, Martina enjoys her six grandchildren and getting out in nature.

Diane M. Sue, Ph.D. CSL studied education and psychology at the University of Michigan and, following a fulfilling career working with children and families, had the privilege of helping raise her identical twin grandsons while continuing her work researching and writing psychology textbooks.

Most recently, she authored Remarkable Resilience: The Life and Legacy of Noémi Bán Beyond the Holocaust, a book documenting the life story of a dear friend and inspirational elder.

Diane has a long-standing interest in cross-cultural connections and global efforts toward climate justice. Diane recently connected with Celtic traditions during a spiritual tour of the west coast of Ireland. As a CSL Diane often includes the topic of resilience in discussions of conscious aging.
